A cell phone tower in Bensalem, Bucks County which was damaged by fire has been taken down and disassembled.
Crews dismantled the 118-foot tower early Saturday morning. It was brought down safely late Friday night. The cell tower, located behind the township’s Public Works Building on the 2200 block of Byberry Road, was in danger of collapsing.
A new tower will be put up in its place within the next four to six weeks to complete, according to authorities.
Welders were working 80 feet in the air when sparks set off a fire ten feet above them around 11:30 a.m. They tried to put it out, but ended up having to call for help. It was place under control about 1 p.m.
The fire left the tower, which stands nearly 10 stories high, leaning over. Dozens of residents were initially evacuated, but allowed back into their homes by mid-afternoon. Several roads were closed but have since been re-opened.
No one was injured in the incident.
